Shilstone, A Brief Overview

Shilstone is a lovingly restored Georgian Manor House and a cherished family home set in several hundred acres of breath-taking rural countryside. Since our first wedding in 2012, Shilstone is now one of Devon’s top wedding venues. The house itself has won numerous awards including Country Life Magazines ‘Restoration of the Century’ award and The Georgian Groups ‘New Building in the Classical Tradition’ award.

The house begins with the East Hall, a bright, airy space with an open fireplace,

which provides a warm welcome. A stunning, iconic, 85 foot passage leads the

eye through a series of arches down the length of the house to the West Hall.

The Dining Room overlooks the cascading pools and valley beyond. This large

paneled room, with full height windows and English oak floor, has a fantastic open

fireplace and for those glorious summer days, doors leading out onto the

South-facing Front Terrace.

The West Hall with its beautiful geometric stone floor and open fire lead out into

the West Garden and Courtyard. Beyond this lies the Walled Garden, a fantastic

space featuring a beautiful Garden Tower and stone fountain. A tree-lined path

leads to our very own Mughal Marquee complete with twinkling fairy lights,

handcrafted oak bar and specialised sound system. The Walled Garden, which

houses the Marquee, offers stunning views of Shilstone’s tiered lakes and of the

rolling hills beyond.

Fully licensed, Shilstone has a beautiful rustic Ceremony Barn and options for

outdoor ceremonies, as well as the beautiful Georgian Manor House and

exquisite Mughal Marquee to host your Summer wedding reception. In the Winter

months, our Rustic Barn, accompanied by our natural, light-filled Terrace Room

and Botanical Atrium host the ceremony, reception and evening party.

Shilstone is a 30-minute drive from Plymouth, 45 minutes from Exeter and less than 2 miles from our local town, Modbury, which offers a full range of food, craft and gift shops,

A.C.Sprowell Furniture at Shilstone

In October of 2022 I undertook some restoration work for the owner of Shilstone House, Sebastian Fenwick. The completion of this restoration work led on to talks with him in regards to the possible re-location of my workshop to Shilstone, plans of further opening up the estate to the public and having a range of different trades and craftspeople onsite. In December 2022 I moved A.C.Sprowell Furniture into a converted barn within the grounds at Shilstone. This move enables me to undertake a range of restoration work for the Shilstone estate and continue to trade as A.C.Sprowell Furniture undertaking private work for customers.

My workshop is situated in one of the barns towards the top of the estate. Just down from the Devon Rural Archive and the Shilstone cafe I am perfectly located for easy access once inside the Shilstone estate. I am now working alongside a team of crafts and tradespeople that all bring their own skills to Shilstone. I share my barn with an established Upholster which enables me to simply pass any work that requires upholstery next door without it having to leave the site. My workshop is equipped to enable me to undertake a large and varied scope of work.
